The costume descriptions below come from the show's director's guide. They may help you in fleshing out who your character is and how they should appear and act on stage. As we move through rehearsals, the directors will work with you and adjust things as necessary.
Elle Woods: Is a fashionable young college graduate who is always well put-together regardless of what she is wearing. Pink is her signature color, which she wears a lot, but she also knows how to accessorize with items of contrasting colors. She changes costumes often during the show, sometimes very quickly, so we suggest under-dressing her costumes whenever possible. Because of these special needs, we have included a detailed breakdown for Elle that should help you keep track of her costumes and allow you to make all of her quick changes manageable.
Scene One: Elle begins the scene in a stylish, light-colored, long, non-pink coat that completely covers her dress. Underneath she wears a stylish pink dress appropriate for a nice date at a fancy restaurant. For the quick change makeover moment with the Delta Nus and Store Manager, she simply removes the coat.
Scene Two: The same stylish pink dress from Scene One.
Scene Three: Elle starts in a pinky fuzzy bathrobe. When she begins singing, she removes the bathrobe to reveal a pair of pants and a fun pink top. She adds a fashionable jacket and a neck scarf when she arrives at Harvard to plead her case.
Scene Four, Five, and Six: Elle is decked out in full pink for her first day of class. This outfit is not as fancy as her date outfit, but she is clearly dressed to impress.
Scene Seven: The key to Elle's bunny costume ls large pink ears. Even If that Is all you use the audience will clearly understand she is in costume. If you want to go further, add a sleek pink top and an oversized pair of fluffy pink pants with a white puffy cotton-ball tall.
Scene Eight: Elle begins the scene in the same outfit as Scene Seven, but will need to change as the scene progresses. When the chorus first sings, Elle removes the ears and the fluffy pants to reveal another pair of simple dress pants. If she has additional time, add a Harvard sweatshirt. Next, when the Harvard classroom is being set up, Elle makes her final change by removing her Harvard sweatshirt and putting on a pink sweater for the classroom.
Scene Nine: Same as Scene Four.
Scene Ten: Elle Is dressed In a fashion-forward jacket, shirt and suit ensemble that is black and white. While the outfit's color Is more understated than what Elle usually wears, it should still be stylish and contemporary.
Scene Eleven: Elle takes off the Jacket from the previous scene and adds a light sweater to the outfit.
Scene Twelve: Same as Scene Eleven.
Scene Thirteen: Elle starts the scene in the long coat from Scene One. When she goes Into the supply closet, she takes off the coat to reveal an amazing bright pink suit.
Scene Fourteen: Same as Scene Thirteen for the beginning, then adding a graduation cap and gown for the last part of the scene.
MARGOT, SERENA, PILAR, GAELEN and the DELTA NUS: Ell's college friends wear contemporary, fashionable clothing appropriate for upbeat California sorority girls. Select clothes with bright colors and subtle patterns, but stay away from pink so Elle will stand out when they are all onstage. And while there should be a similar feel to all of these costumes, be sure to make each girl unique in her own special way through accessories such as jewelry, hats, belts, scarves, etc. STORE MANAGER and SALESWOMAN: The store employees are dressed more conservatively than the Delta Nus. they are both wearing basic skirts and pastel blouses. WARNER HUNTINGTON III: Warner always looks like he spent a lot of money on his clothing. He wears pressed khakis or dark dress pants, a blue button-up shirt, a suit jacket, and dress shoes. Replace the Jacket with a cardigan sweater to give him a more casual look in class or at the party. WAITERS: The wait staffwear black pants and white dress shirts. Add bow ties and white towels on their arms for a more stuffy look. KATE: Is dressed In the same vein as the other Delta Nus, but she has glasses, a pastel sweater set, and a plaid skirt or pants to highlight her bookish qualities. GRANDMASTER CHAD: Chad is the coolest Frat Boy. He wears colorful board shorts, an Island t-shirt, and a backwards baseball cap. FRAT BOYS: Chad's friendsare all wearing colorful board shorts and t-shirts. If they have time, they can change into khakis when they head off to Harvard to plead Elle's case. WINTHROP, LOWEU & PFORZHEIMER: They have dark brown or black dress pants, white or gray button-up shirts, ties, and a sweater or suit Jacket. Their clothes are solid In color and are not at all embellished, which is in direct contrast with the Delta Nus. THE JET BLUE PILOT: He or she wears black pants, a blue button-up shirt, and a pilot's cap. EMMETT FORREST: Emmett looks like the more casually dressed version of Warner. He wears an older corduroy sports jacket, a light blue or green button-up shirt, khakis, and suede shoes or loafers instead of dress shoes. Make sure Emmett's costume looks nice next to Elle's as they need to look like a couple. AARON SCHULTZ: He has money to wear nice clothes, but he keeps it casual in khakis and a collared shirt In a solid color. SUNDEEP AGRAWAL PADAMADAN: Sundeep is dressed in a flowing pastel skirt and a coordinating billowy blouse. She might have a slight flower pattern in her clothes, but nothing as flashy as the Delta Nus or Salon Workers would wear. ENID HOOPES: Enid wears dark cargo pants, an oversized sweater In earth tones, and combat or hiking books. Enid will also add a permed wig for the last scene of the show. VIVIENNE KENSINGTON: She is always dressed impeccably, although her color choices (black, gray, and dark blue) are rather basic. She wears pant suits, fitted jackets, high-collared shirts, and sweater sets. There are no flashy accessories or splashes of color to be found. PROFESSOR CALLAHAN: Callahan is always dressed as if he is in a courtroom. He wears a black or dark blue with long brown socks, work boots, three-piece suit with a classic tie and nice dress shoes. He can remove the jacket in more casual moments, but he would leave on his vest. HARVARD STUDENTS: The students are in earth tones to contrast to the colorful clothes of the students in California. They wear contemporary clothing you might see on any college campus: a variety of jeans, khakis, t-shirts and sweaters. PAULETTE: The hairdresser wears loud patterns and big colors that might not work together, but somehow Paulette pulls it off. She is dressed comfortably in pants, a blouse, and fun chunky shoes. For variety, she can add an oversized sweater for some scenes. KIKI THE COLORIST, CASHIER, STYLIST and THE OTHER SALON WORKERS: They wear a colorful collection of clothes highlighting their own style. They wear bolder patterns that are less form-fitting than the Delta Nus' costumes. A variety of skirts, pants, t-shirts, blouses, and large accessories are appropriate for these characters. These girls all dance in the "Bend And Snap," so their outfits must allow for big movements. WHITNEY: She is dressed similarly to Vivienne, but a little more casually as she is never in the courtroom. DEWEY: Dewey wears overalls, a stained white t-shirt, and work boots. BROOKE WYNDHAM: Brook starts the show dressed in solid bright-colored workout clothes that are form fitting. She changes into an orange prison jump suit half of the way through her first number. Once she is at the trial, she wears a simple dark suit that doesn't draw focus to her. INMATES: The inmatesare all in orange prison jumpsuits like Brooke. PRISON GUARD: He or sheneeds black pants and a cop's uniform top. JUDGE: The judge is dressed in a black judge's robe. CHUTNEY WYNDHAM: Chutney dresses in a simple skirt and light-colored blouse appropriate to wear in court. Chutney also needs a majorly-permed wig. Make sure her blouse is a distinctly different color than her hair so her hair will stand out.
